A touch of bad news
Well, I'm not really sure how many of you check the site anymore, but I don't know how else to relay information to everyone at once.
I've fallen nearly 2 months behind in my thesis work. The good news is, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to recover from it, as long as I really put my nose to the grindstone for the next couple of months. The bad news is that part of that will include shortening my winter break. My current thought is halving my break from 4 weeks down to 2. That being said, this isn't necessarily a terrible thing. I'll probably be spending most of the time in lab, which is exhausting, but at the same time very enjoyable and almost relaxing. Also, if we start planning soon, you guys could maybe come visit me? We've been talking about a visit for three and a half years, and we're really running out of time.
Let me know what your guys thoughts are on this!

Dates
I'll be in San Francisco from Saturday, December 19 until Sunday, January 3. Then I'll be in Oregon but still on vacation from Jan 3 to January 17. If you guys want some help planning this, don't hesitate to ask.
For Google Maps reference, the official address of my school is 900 State Street, Salem, OR 97301
If you take AMTRAK, there's a train station right next to campus. If you fly to PDX (Portland), campus is about an hour away, and you can either take the Hut Shuttle or a cab. A cab is usually cheaper (and almost always faster) if you have more than 2-3 people, since they've been raising the price of the shuttle.

It's a bit of a continuation of the project I did last year. I'll be taking soil samples from a hot spring and a compost pile, and from regular soil nearby each. Then I'll grow a little bit of the sample at 50°C (122°F) and 37°C (human body temperature) and see how many things grow. Then I'll pick out a few colonies from each site and isolate them, and then identify them as well as I can. The hardest part by far is going to be IDing them. Along the way I'll take some pictures of dyed samples and hopefully I'll be able to justify taking some pictures with an Electron Microscope, which would be fuckin awesome.
